A few weeks back, Mark and I decided to have dinner first before going to the wake of our friend. I fetched Mark from work and then we headed to the Ayala Triangle Gardens for dinner.
Mark was already watching his food intake since he's preparing for an upcoming bodybuilding competition, so after rummaging the Ayala Triangle for restaurants and their menus, we both agreed to dine at Wee Nam Kee. Steamed, boiled, or grilled chicken and fish are the usual dishes that Mark eat when he's on a diet so he got one order each of the restaurant's steamed chicken and fish.
Marks first order was the Chicken Rice. You can have it roasted, steamed, cooked with soy sauce, or try a combination. It also comes in personal set, quarter, half, and whole sizes. I am not a fan of steamed food, and it's my first time to try Hainanese chicken, and I must say that this dish is okay. The meat was cooked well and I liked that it didn't have that stench of raw chicken. The chicken chunks were laid in a bed of sauce (which somehow had the taste of soy sauce and a little lemony/citrus taste) with cucumber slices. The sauce had just the right amount of saltiness which is perfect for Mark's diet.
The dish is also served with chicken soup. It's actually a chicken stock seasoned with pepper and spring onions, which I must say was so good. Being the restaurant's signature dish, the Chicken Rice I think was a good choice since Mark enjoyed this dish and finished it all in no time. :p
I liked the steamed fish more than the chicken. The chunks of fish fillet (cream dory I think) were cooked well, eliminating that fishy smell and taste. The sauce had more saltiness in it which I liked and the generous amount of garlic bits added texture and more flavor to the dish.
I wanted to have rice that night and chose two viands to go with it haha! I got an order of their Beef Broccoli in Oyster Sauce and their Cereal Prawns. The beef slices were very tender! I actually didn't have a hard time chewing each slice. It's so tender that it feels like I'm eating a mushroom with broccoli dish haha! But I love how tender the beef was and the taste of the oyster sauce which ooze out in every chew. The mushrooms were equally delicious and juicy in every bite. The broccoli chunks were also cooked just the way I like it, not too soggy and still had that crunch.
The star of the table for me that night was the Cereal Prawns! The four pieces of large prawns were deep-fried to perfection that you can already eat the shells. The sweet cereal that covered the prawns goes so well with the sweet shrimp meat. Although I would have wanted more saltiness in the shrimp itself, I still loved everything in it. The sweet cereal was pretty addicting that I ended up polishing the cereals and dumping them all on top of my rice. Yum yum!
I also got a cup of their Chicken Rice. This too was good! Tasted just like the chicken soup. You can actually eat this on its own, without any viand. :D
Mark and I enjoyed our dinner, although our overall dining experience wasn't superb. The food was good alright, but their service was a bit lousy. The waiting staff who served us was attentive at first when he got our orders, which is good, but suddenly disappeared after our orders were served. There weren't any noticeable waiting staff at the restaurant because most of them were chit chatting either outside or at the counter area. So I'm still not sure if we'll be coming back. :p
